Spam is increasing at a record rating and Telstra is providing advice to coincide with the Australasian Consumer Fraud Taskforce’s 2010 Fraud Week campaign: ‘Online Offensive – Fighting Fraud Online’.

More than eight in ten Australians access the internet weekly to shop online and visit social networking sites. When shopping online you need to minimise the risk of fraud and ensure you are safe online.

It often doesn’t matter how savvy you are online, scammers target all age groups and you need to be aware of common internet scams.

As a part of the $38.2 million National Enabling Technologies Strategy the Rudd Government has introduced a national guide to the safe development of new technologies; such as biotechnology and nanotechnology. The strategy is part of the Rudd Government’s $1.1 billion Super Science Initiative.

Innovation Minister, Senator Kim Carr said that new technologies have great potential but they can only be successful with the communities support. “Health, safety and environmental protection are paramount for the Government. This strategy is about ensuring we meet the highest standards while at the same time maximising opportunities to develop these cutting-edge technologies,” explained Senator Kim Carr.

Alexander McQueen, a top English fashion designer known for his amazing designs passed away on February 11th, 2010, aged 40. McQueen committed suicide at his Hyde Park home. Alexander McQueen was grieving the loss of his mother, a teacher, who passed away on the 2nd of February. 

Alexander McQueen’s designs were extraordinary which is why he was awarded the British Designer of the Year award four times. His designs were worn by international celebrities, Rihanna, Bjork and Lady Gaga wore McQueen's renowned 12-inch heels in the video for the single, Bad Romance.

University of Sydney is investigating the link between the addiction to internet porn and how it affects people’s work, finances and relationships. Dr Gomathi Sitharthan found that approximately 70% of men and 30% of females had accessed sites which contained porn.

Dr Gomathi Sitharthan is the main researcher behind the study and the Deputy Coordinator of the University of Sydney’s Graduate Program in Sexual Health.

Sitharthan stated that “viewing porn online becomes a major problem only when people become so preoccupied that they spend 16 to 18 hours a day doing nothing else but watching porn, with serious impacts on relationships, work, studies, and finance.”

Regular brain exercise aids healthy ageing

A study conducted by Alzheimer’s Australia WA has shown that two hours of brain exercises a week can help fight age-related memory loss and improve a person’s mental capacity.

The study was conducted with people in their 60s, 70s and 80s from a retirement village and a senior fitness centre who spent two hours a week over an eight-week period participating in structured brain fitness.

The program titled ‘Brain Fitness Pilot Project’ consisted of computer-based hearing exercises which aimed to sharpen a person’s ability to take in speech allowing the brain to hear and remember more details.

Recently Jennifer Hawkins, model and Miss Universe 2004, posed nude and un-airbrushed for the cover and a photo spread in Australian Marie Claire. This cover was meant to produce a positive body-image for all Australian women; however, it has done the opposite with many claiming that Hawkins doesn’t represent a ‘real’ woman.

Jackie Frank, editor of Australian Marie Claire, explained that a survey of 5,500 readers showed that only 12% of women were truly happy with their body. The idea of putting a naked and un-changed Jen Hawkins on the cover was to create a positive statement about body image.

New R&D Tax Credit

The Rudd Government has released a draft legislation for the new R&D Tax Credit, which is said to be the “the biggest reform to business innovation policy in over a decade”.


The draft provides information on the Governments commitment to provide generous, predicable and less complex tax incentives as the current R&D Tax Concession is outdated. The new scheme will ensure a boost in research and development in regards to supporting jobs and strengthening Australian businesses during the economic recovery.
