Suburbia - Robin Gibson Gallery

Marianne Cara, John Doherty, Guy Gilmour, Geoff Harvey, Ted Hillyer, Max
Lieberman, Ishbel Morag M Miller, Ian Pearson, Jeff Rigby, Bryan Westwood
and Maryanne Wick.
Eleven artists have been assembled at the Robin Gibson Gallery under the
banner of Suburbia. This curious collection of painted images, which include
Marianne Cara¹s The Christening Day, Backyard Australia and Ted Hillyer¹s
Edge of a Coastal Town, raises the question of where does suburbia begin and
finish.
The artists have presented images from every direction north, south, east
and west of the Sydney GPO. We see the extraordinary in the ordinary,
whether it be Morag Miller¹s explorations of Glebe¹s Foley Park or Bryan
Westwood¹s Centennial Park at sunset. There is a woman prostrate in the bath
of Guy Gilmour¹s painting of the idyllic suburban bathroom and a series of
exquisite pencil drawings by expatriate Maryanne Wick, which capture the
pedestrian activity of a Korean neighbourhood.
